Building an Audience

It’s been said that as soon as you get an idea that you want to run with, start building an audience right away. So whether that’s a business, a product, or even a movie, you need to niche down and find your target market. Here are some quick tips on how to do this.

1. FIND A NICHE. This is #1 for a reason. And it’s probably the defining factor for success in modern day marketing and for building an audience. We’re not marketing to the masses anymore, but to a specific group of like-minded people. As I’ve heard many times, “The riches are in the niches.” (Depending on how you pronounce it) :)

2. DO RECON. Research will help you figure out what the need is in a particular industry. Maybe you are passionate about food and came up with an all natural product that helps keep food fresher over time. You can always search to see what’s out there in the market place, but also see what other “foodies” are using and talking about on social media. Make sure you join groups online that specifically talk about “all natural” foods and products and engage with them.

3. START DOING SOCIAL. If you’re going to build an online audience, the best place to start (depending on the industry) would be Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. I know you’re probably saying “well…duh…” But you wouldn’t believe how many people don’t do any social media and wonder why their product or business isn’t getting much traction. So for example, we’re working on the marketing for an indie film currently and it’s nowhere near production yet, but we started building a social following months ago. Why? Because the sooner the better! Once we knew what our niche was, we were able to hone into the fans of that genre and build the social post/marketing around it. And by the time the film is released, there will be an audience ready to watch it.

4. CREATE GOOD CONTENT. So, I may say that some content is better than no content, but really good content is what gets eyeballs and builds your audience! If we’re posting an image, you bet some thought went into it as well as when to post it. If we create a video for social, we’re trying to deliver not only good quality video production, but making sure our message is solid and of some sort of value to our audience.

5. TEST! TEST! TEST! What does this mean? Well, when you’re running a social media campaign, make sure you test to see what works! Facebook, especially, makes it super easy to target an audience and do a split test or A/B test with an ad. This kind of testing lets you change things like audience, creative or placement, to determine which strategy performs best and improve future campaigns.

With that said, if you apply these five tips, you’ll be well on your way to building your niche audience and giving yourself much higher rate of success on making that great idea into a world-changing, and hopefully, money making IP!
