Don't be Blockbuster in 2020

Cleaning through a few things in our closet over the weekend, my wife found my old #Blockbuster video rental card. I hadn’t seen one of these in forever and I’ll admit, I had some feelings of nostalgia. I mean how couldn’t you? If you grew up in the 80s/90s, Blockbuster was a weekly experience. It’s funny how excited you could get just going to rent a movie.

But where did Blockbuster go wrong? I get it, if you can rent a movie on your TV without having to get in the car and go to a store you’re saving precious time. But I definitely feel lucky that I grew up in a time where we HAD to do stuff like that. That not everything was just a click away. Sometimes there’s more reward in the wait. But that’s a whole other lesson for my kids :)

As time went on and technology progressed, Blockbuster decided not to change with the times. I guess they figured that they owned the movie rental space, that is until a little company called #Netflix came out and would send you the DVD rental in the mail. I remember being fascinated by this. I could find all sorts of old shows or movies online and they’d send them right to my house. Unfortunately by the time Blockbuster tried to give it a go, it was too late.

So what lessons can be learned here? Too many to list, but I do feel that in 2020 where things are moving extremely fast, if you’re going to be successful in your space either A, you need to be a pioneer of the next best thing for your industry or B, keep up with the changes and how people are receiving information. #Video, for example, has always been the best way to communicate your message to others. They can see your personality (or your brand’s personality) and get an overall tone of your passion. You can also entertain and educate better with video. It’s just the best way to convey the information you’re trying to give. So if you’re looking to stay ahead of your competition, don’t be a Blockbuster and just think you’re the king of your space because you always have - because there’s always a Netflix right behind you using newer methods to jump ahead of you.
