To Storyboard or Not to Storyboard

If you create and market videos for a passion or professionally, you understand how things can quickly get messy. Ideas can get scrambled and most often you will find that not everyone is on the same page. This is a hinderance and can jam up production, making it nearly impossible to complete the video. Luckily, we have found ways to have a smooth production, and this all starts in pre-production. One tool to help keep everything moving nicely is to have a #storyboard.

Storyboards are collections of detailed illustrations of what the look, feel, and style of your video is. These illustrations could be created in different ways. An artist could sketch out each image by hand or they could be created virtually. Over time, the process of storyboarding has become easier for designers through the use of illustration app such as photoshop or Storyboards 3D. Apps such as these allow for more people to pursue the craft of storyboarding because you don’t have to necessarily be good at drawing, plus it is quick and easy to develop and share. Usually, storyboards are displayed in color and contain minute details of the action in the scene. This allows for everyone on set to know what they are working towards.

Storyboards are important to video production because it allows for the organization of different notions to form into a singular thought for the video. This allows you to have a good idea of how your shots will flow together, shot by shot. This increases productivity because no time would be unnecessarily wasted due to disorganization.

Storyboards are a necessity for video productions that want to move smoothly. You will notice that this will fall into a domino effect, making everything else after this happen effortlessly. It is important for every video production to have an outline for it, no matter how short or long the video is, because you can always find problems if you don’t plan it out ahead of time.
